Analogman Prince of Tone

The Analogman Prince of Tone (POT) is a single-channel overdrive pedal introduced as a more accessible alternative to the highly sought-after King of Tone (KoT). Released in the early 2010s, it retains the tonal character of the KoT while offering a simplified design and smaller footprint. Like its predecessor, the POT is based on the classic Marshall Bluesbreaker circuit but includes modern enhancements for versatility and usability.

History and Design

  • Origins: The POT was created to meet demand for the KoT, which often had long waiting lists. It features one side of the KoT's dual-channel design, incorporating the "higher gain" option standard in its circuit.
  • Controls: The pedal has three knobs (Volume, Tone, Drive) and an external three-way toggle switch for selecting Boost, Overdrive, or Distortion modes. Internal DIP switches allow further customization, such as a low-mid lift (DIP1) and a turbo mode for added compression and brightness (DIP2).
  • Build: Though assembled in China to keep costs down, the POT uses high-quality components, including Japanese chips and capacitors, ensuring durability and tonal consistency.
  • Clean Boost: Toggle set to Boost mode, Drive at 9 o'clock, Tone at noon, Volume slightly above unity. This setting provides transparent tone enhancement.
  • Classic Overdrive: Overdrive mode with Drive at 11–12 o'clock, Tone at noon or slightly higher, Volume adjusted for output. Ideal for rhythm or light lead tones.
  • Distortion Mode: Distortion mode with Drive at 2–3 o'clock, Tone at noon or slightly lower for smoother highs. This setting delivers a compressed, saturated sound suitable for heavier styles.

Notable Players

The Prince of Tone has been embraced by guitarists looking for a versatile overdrive capable of stacking well with other pedals:

  • Eddie Heinzelman: Uses it live and in studio sessions for its clarity and flexibility.
  • Many players pair it with other overdrives like the Wampler Euphoria or MXR Timmy to craft rich layered tones.

Legacy

The Analogman Prince of Tone is celebrated as a more affordable and readily available alternative to the King of Tone. Its ability to function as a clean boost, transparent overdrive, or distortion makes it highly versatile. Despite being a "smaller sibling," it maintains the tonal quality that has made Analogman pedals legendary among professional musicians and enthusiasts alike.
